ROADTEST RENAULT 16 TS (part 2)


Hence the Renault 16 TS accelerates faster and drives faster than the regular R 16, Renault decided to adapt new tyres. They are not only larger (155mm instead 145 mm) but also from the XAS type or from the brand new ZX type, both Michelin of course.  These ZX tyres are really good, only a little noisier on brick stone roads. The XAS tyres offer less comfort but they give better road holding.
The brakes have been enlarged and the breaking system got a servo that works neat and with a pleasant ‘feel’. The servo doubles the force being sent to the brakes, just right.
Because of a better view in the dark at high speeds, Renault mounted a pair of ‘projecteurs a longe     portee’ on the 16 TS, gave the screen wiper two speeds and the front screen is now being cleaned via four instead of two small ‘irrigating knobs’.
The Renault 16 TS is a very well provided vehicle. There are not only a rev counter and a lot of control instruments at the pleasantly layouted dashboard, but also a lot of accessories that fail at the standard R 16. The rear screen has a heating system to provide clear sight in moist situations, the passenger is being provided with a tiny map-reading light that shines over her/his shoulder on the hands, the seats offer more side support. The rear part of the seat is completely adjustable. As a matter of fact, the R 16 is one of the best-equipped vehicles below Dfl 10,000.-. The only item left to be desired are backward driving lights.

The road holding capacity is extremely good. One may drive this car very fast around corners and benches; in no way this car tends to perform sudden unexpected movements. A fair characteristic of its road holding capacities is ‘safe’. Yes indeed, one has to really force this car into a dangerous road holding situation.
The main factor that makes this vehicle such a desirable automobile has yet not been mentioned. The overall comfort, the pleasant seats (if necessary for more than 1,000 kms), the non-tiring capacity, these are the most outstanding features of the Renault 16, and even more of the 16 TS.

And that, dear readers, is one of the most important safety increasing factors of all. Let alone the fact that this car is indeed a very safe car, both in active as in passive view.
We could not easily describe you a car that offers you the same qualities for less than Dfl 10,000.- than the Renault 16 TS!
